I am often asked what hot drinks you can consume in the cold season despite being fructose intolerant. Away from tea and coffee. This usually refers to alcoholic drinks, of course. Because there is no punch and mulled wine. Apart from the low-fructose nmi mulled wine(to be found in this book on page 100). I recently came across something that is really delicious… the Hot Toddy.
Jump to RecipeIn England, people like to drink hot toddy when they feel the threat of a cold and to strengthen the body against the wet cold. Of course, such claims cannot be substantiated scientifically, but the whole thing can be assessed in terms of taste. It’s damn tasty.
Problem of the Hot Toddy: Honey
Now one of the ingredients is honey. This is a problem because honey is known to have too much fructose. But thank goodness there are now honey substitutes. I tried the hot toddy with Honix from Frunix and with rice syrup from the health food store. Honestly, Honix is much better for this drink. With the rice syrup, the aftertaste is somehow indescribably funny.
Whiskey – a question of faith?
Now whiskey lovers will cry out when I say: I don’t really like whiskey. I only find the stuff good warm in hot toddies. And I don’t really care what kind of whiskey goes into it. I just think it should be a “sweet” whiskey, i.e. a little sweeter and not smoky. And since the Hot Toddy is British, I would prefer British varieties. So a scotch is best.
